So, here's the deal:
- Moved to California, got ADSL (March 2000). PacBell decided a few months later, shortly after I'd cancelled my service, that they needed to set a more conservative distance limit on ADSL. I'm outside that limit, maybe because my service had about 35% uptime.
- I ordered an SDSL line through NorthPoint (fall 2000 sometime). That was fantastic, until NorthPoint tanked (March 2001).
- I then ordered an SDSL line through Rhythms. They tanked before the line even got provisioned. With no Covad on my CO, DSL ceased being possible.
- I eventually discovered an ISP called MegaPath. They had SDSL on my CO. Woohoo! I placed an order, and after a few weeks I got some bad news -- they'd left that CO 6 months before. Stupid motherfuckers.
- After awhile, I called up AT&T to get cable. They came and installed a cable "modem," but it would not sync. They replaced it. It would not sync. The guy told me he'd have his supervisor call him to set up an appointment. His supervisor never did. I had them come back out several times, but each time they were baffled and left without my cable working. I returned the modem after 4 months.
- Out of sheer frustration, I tried AT&T (now Comcast) about a year later. Approximately the same shit went down, but this time they at least had the cojones to declare my building's cable wiring unfit to carry a data signal.
Oh, and my phone line's TERRIBLE, so I can't even hold v90 consistently. This is why my Internet connection sucks ass.

UPDATE (July 2003): I actually fucking got broadband through SpeakEasy and Covad!
